Tax System: If the "smart people" can't understand, what about us "common folk"?

There seems to be lots of failure to pay taxes going on for some of Obama's nominees (Timothy Geithner, Tom Daschle, Nancy Killefer). The good thing for them, is that so far they have been able to pay the back taxes and penalties with the stroke of a pen on a check. As someone commentated on the site of a major news source: no wonder the system has no money. The problem for the rest of us, is that when we make an honest mistake on our taxes, we often cannot afford the past tax bill and the penalties and interest.

Just makes you wonder about lots of other folks out there and their true tax status. And, these are educated people, many with CPAs who are making these tax errors. Is our system so complicated? If these people can't understand the system enough to pay properly... how can we "common folk"? The reality of the situation is that many of us common folk are often paying too much in taxes because we don't fully understand the deductions we are entitled to.

Is it possible that these educated people who miss paying taxes are really taking a calculated risk? If they aren't audited (or appointed to a high level position by the President), that's just money in the bank.

Creativity gets the job

A New Yorker who was laid off nearly a year ago resorted to standing on the street with a sandwich sign saying "MIT grad fr hire." He's landed a job as a senior manager at an accounting firm. Of course his resume backed up his creativity. Check out this video, taken several months ago.

By the way, his wife and kids did move to Nebraska (in with her parents), but will return to N.Y. with him at the end of the school year. Seems like a nice story.

Apparently some people are above the law

Okay, so it's really nothing new... some people are above the law and we know it, but check out this recent article about a Jackson County, Missouri establishing its first code of ethics... Here are the the highlights:
From The Examiner - The code of ethics will "govern all county business... The order, signed by Executive Mike Sanders, will establish guidelines for county employees." But here comes the interesting part -

"The code will not cover county legislators or other elected county officials.
However, on Monday legislators decided to have staff draft an ordinance that
gives their stamp of approval to the document."

Hmmm. Does that sound right to you? Let's be glad they support it though ; )

How old do you feel?

A soon to be published study shows that older people feel 13 years younger than they are and think they look 10 years younger than their actual age. And guess what... to my surprise, women felt they looked closer to their actual age than men did... The researchers speculated several reasons for this... they can be found in the Live Science article here.

Some deals sound better than they are

I am not in the market to buy a car right now, but I found this Yahoo Autos article interesting and think it can be applied to other major purchases. It definitely includes some considerations my husband and I made when we purchased our home two years ago. Basically it discusses some of the many zero-percent financing offers now available from car companies. Some are really good deals. Others, depending on your personal financial situation, may not be as financially beneficial for you than not low-interest financing options. Before making a decision, do the math. Consider the monthly payment you can afford, and how long you'd like to be paying a car note. And, read the fine print - we always hear that but often times we don't follow the advice.

Wash hands often and beware of germs

Okay, I hope not to create any OCD incidences with this post, but a newly released study examines the length of time germs survive on common household surfaces... you'd be surprised. In the same Yahoo News article discussing the study, researchers told of other studies like checking the toys in the waiting rooms of doctors' offices. Bottom line: be careful what you touch, sanitize your home and work space regularly, and wash your hands often. Check out the article here.

A friend sent this article about love and relationships.... a few interesting facts. I think we've all heard that people in relationships are happier people, that's No. 25 on the list. But what about No. 20, that a man's beard grows fastest when he anticipates sex? Or No. 10, that women of the Tiwi tribe of the South Pacific are married at birth. Interesante.

A house for real cheap

Read this article about a woman who bought a house for $1.75 on eBay... the house was in foreclosure and looks run down but still... The article says she has to pay yard cleanup costs too, so I am guessing the sale includes the land too (as it should, but you know how folks do funny stuff sometimes). The bank sure took an L.

What is it that makes repeat offenders continue to offend?

The young man in this article isn't the first recently who is accused of committing a crime while wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet in the Charlotte area. That just doesn't make good sense to me. He is apparently a repeat offender, but what causes people to act out in this way. There has got to be something down deep that would cause someone to show that little use of common sense. I mean, they use GPS to monitor your location. It seems like a slam dunk in terms of securing a conviction. Read this WCNC article. What do you think?

KFC secret recipe may be up for grabs

This is truly a crazy, silly story and sounds like a bit of a media stunt. The story is that KFC temporarily relocates the original handwritten secret recipe so security efforts to protect it can be revamped. I mean who would have known if they wouldn't have told us. But, I'm saying, if more folks would make some good KFC chicken, I wouldn't be mad if the secret got out. For real, they have some franchises they need to share the secret with.
